Spring Concert 2010 at the Donau Schwaben Club

The evening with entertainers from Germany can only be described in superlatives.   Stimmung war Spitze.  The headliners were 3 fabulous musicians calling themselves the Bergspitzecho, Heidi from the north coast with a dynamite voice and the legs to go with it, Anni and Moni from Reinlandpfalz who really know how to light the room on fire, and of course Rudi Ecker with his honey baritone voice that could make any girl from 19 to 91 fall in love with him.  Did I mention that it was a fabulous evening; that would be an understatement.

What made the evening so immensely enjoyable was not only the songs, of which there were many classic golden oldies, and even some that were Soldaten Lieder which used to be forbidden back in the day, but also the booming personalities behind the music that set the room and hearts aflame.

Heidi studied music and dance ever since she was a teenager and like a good girl listened to her parents to have a “real” career and give up the “Brotlose Kuenste”. She became a Psychologist and had her own practice for about 10 years.  Talking to clients all day long and then singing at night, she not only ran out of steam but also damaged her voice.  The time came for her to make a choice and follow her true vocation— singing.  Her decision to set a 2 year trial period devoted to her music turned into a 30 year career.  And she couldn’t be happier.

When Rudi Ecker first opened his mouth to sing, there was an audible gasp of astonishment from the audience because he sounds so much like Freddy Quinn.  His voice was clear and rich, strong and oooh-so-wonderful.  And yet when he first started singing professionally 40 years ago, he didn’t make much of a splash, in fact not even a ripple in the German music scene.  After his failed music debut, he decided to get a real job because his family obligations came first.  Rudi became a butcher and for 30 years he ran a very successful butchershop.  Now that he is retired, his singing which was once a hobby has become his full-time career.

Anni and Moni are very well known locally in their neck of the woods of Reinlandpfalz, and they sure know how to have a good time.  No hesitation with those girls, no lack of self-confidence, in fact so much the opposite that they kept the spirits high. They constantly slid into their Rheinlander dialect to make the funniest and often outrageous comments that some may not have fully understood.  Anni and Moni have been best friends since they were school girls, have always loved to sing and perform.  Their repertoire contains of many of their own compositions as well as the golden oldies.  Despite that both of them are mothers and wives, they have the love and support of their families to go on the road.  It’s not hard to see that Anni and Moni are living their dream and having fun.

Our evening together passed all too quickly.  Lucky for us that they brought sufficient CDs along for us to continue to enjoy each one of them and have a lasting memory of a most fabulous evening.
